Decks and fencing: prepare a brief providers can quote

By Doory

Deck and fence quotes vary with the structure, materials, site and extent of the work. This checklist helps you describe the project and compare inclusions; it is not a building assessment or a price estimate.

1. Separate repairs from replacement

Describe whether you need a few boards, posts or a gate repaired, a full replacement or new work. Show the whole structure and close-ups of visible damage. Let the provider assess the underlying condition rather than assuming the visible damage is the full job.

2. Share rough dimensions and materials

Give approximate deck dimensions or fence length and height. Include the existing material and preferred finish, if known. If you are still choosing materials, ask for options to be priced separately against the same scope.

3. Explain access and site conditions

Mention slopes, steps, narrow access and nearby structures or planting. Say whether old materials need removing and whether parking is available. Ask what the provider needs to check in person before a firm quote.

4. Confirm requirements and responsibilities

Before agreeing the work, ask who will check any design, permission or specialist requirements for the project. Confirm the proposed scope, materials, preparation, waste removal and finishing. This checklist does not determine what approvals your project needs.

5. Compare written quotes fairly

Compare equivalent materials and work. Check allowances, exclusions, GST where applicable, estimated timing and payment milestones. Agree how changes will be priced and approved before extra work starts, and retain the quote and invoice.
