Anyone can list themselves as a tradesperson online. Doory verifies them first. Every service partner goes through identity and business checks before they can join, and professionals offering licensed trade work go through an extra layer: their licence is checked against New Zealand's official trade registers, not just taken on trust.
Licensed trades — checked against the official registers
Restricted trade work in New Zealand is regulated for good reason. Before a professional can quote on this kind of job through Doory, we confirm their licence is real and current with the government body that actually issues it:
We confirm the name matches, the licence class covers the work on offer, and the licence is current — not lapsed or suspended — before that category goes live on their profile. Licences are re-checked on renewal so cover doesn't quietly expire.
Public liability insurance
Licensed trade partners are also asked for a current Certificate of Currency for public liability insurance. We record the cover and renewal date and follow up ahead of expiry, so a lapsed policy doesn't go unnoticed.
Identity & business verification
Every partner — licensed trade or not — is checked against New Zealand's official business register (NZBN) and provides photo ID before they can create a profile. Admin review typically completes within one to two business days.
Reviews you can trust
A review can only be left by the customer on that exact completed, paid job — there's no way to review a professional you never actually hired through Doory. That's the difference between a star rating and a real track record.
Common questions
Are the tradespeople on Doory licensed?
Where a job legally requires it, yes. Plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers are checked against the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) register; electricians against the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) register; and builders doing restricted building work against the Licensed Building Practitioners (LBP) register. A professional only appears for that category once their licence is confirmed current.
Does Doory check public liability insurance?
Yes. Licensed trade partners are asked for a current Certificate of Currency for public liability insurance as part of verification, and we track the renewal date so cover does not quietly lapse.
How does Doory verify a plumber, gasfitter or electrician specifically?
We look them up by name on the official PGDB or EWRB register, confirm the licence class matches the work they are offering, and check it is current — not expired or suspended — before approving that skill on their profile.
Can reviews on Doory be faked?
No. Reviews are locked to the customer on that specific completed, paid job — there is no way to leave a review without having actually hired that professional through Doory, so ratings reflect real work.
What happens if a professional's licence lapses or insurance expires?
Doory tracks renewal dates and follows up before they lapse. A professional whose licence or insurance goes out of date is suspended from that category until it is renewed and re-verified.
Is my personal information safe?
Your contact details are shared only with the professional you choose to hire — never before, and never with anyone else. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail.
