Moving quotes depend on the items, distance, access and help required. Give each business the same brief so you can compare the total cost and the work included, rather than just an hourly rate.
1. List what needs moving
List the large items, approximate number of boxes and anything heavy, fragile or unusually shaped. Include dimensions for large furniture and photos without personal documents. Say whether furniture must be dismantled and reassembled.
2. Describe pickup and delivery access
Give both suburbs and describe stairs, lifts, gate widths, driveway access and the distance from parking to the door. For an apartment, check lift booking and loading arrangements with the building manager. Share exact access instructions privately with your selected provider.
3. Separate packing from transport
State whether you will pack everything yourself or need packing materials and help. Ask who supplies protective wrapping, how fragile items will be handled and whether unpacking is part of the job.
4. Compare all charges
Check the number of movers, vehicle size, minimum charge, travel time, waiting time, extra stops and GST where applicable. Ask when hourly charging starts and finishes, or what could change a fixed quote. Do not assume disposal of unwanted items is included in a house move.
5. Confirm the plan in writing
Agree the date, arrival window, cancellation terms and how delays will be handled. Ask the business about responsibility for damage, exclusions and any insurance cover, and keep its written answer with your quote. Confirm the final item list before moving day.
